If you are a lover of architecture, this church is not to be missed. The church also has a history of being involved in pre-civil war slavery debates. The church was opened in 1897, and merged with St. The dates of 18, relate to the years that the congregation was moved from Mulberry Street to Fourth Avenue, and finally to the present building in 1895. The St Paul's congregation was actually founded in 1835, which is etched on a cornerstone to the right of the building. The three arch structure is repeated on both levels of the church, and topped by a triangular shaped roof in between the towers. This design is further accentuated by the towers being at different angles. The right tower is an octagonal shape design with the left tower being a square shape. Both towers are topped with light blue roofs, with the tower to the right being the taller at 210 feet. The two tower design is unique, and we thought reminded us of the two minaret mosques in Central Asia. The church is an imposing structure, which was built to accommodate 1,300 worshippers. The church is easily reached by taking the red subway line to 86th street station, then a short walk in a westerly direction. It was also recognised as a city landmark in 1981. It was designed by Robert Robertson and dedicated in 1897. We visited this church, as it is, in our opinion, one of the most beautiful in Manhattan. Other attractions nearby include two churches at the intersection of West End Avenue and W 86th Street. A short walk north is the Joan of Arc monument. This is a great place to relax, with many benches nearby. It is difficult to view the nearby Hudson River, as the foliage is quite dense, with many trees. In the park nearby, there are three canons which were used in the civil war. The names of battles, and famous Union Army generals have been etched on them. Just before reaching the steps to the monument, are two columnar structures, seemingly guarding the entrance.

The monument is not accessible, as it is in need of repair, and protected by a perimeter fence. The design of the monument was adapted from the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens, and has been used on other civil war monuments, and notable landmarks in the USA. The architects were Charles and Arthur Stoughton, and the monument was erected in 1902 to honour the soldiers who defended the Union in the American Civil War. It may be easiest reached by taking the M5 bus or the red subway line to 86th street station and taking a short walk in a westerly direction. The Soldiers and Sailors monument is located at the intersection of Riverside Drive and W 89th Street.
